Six years ago my parents retired and moved to Hobart. This was always their plan and I was very happy for them when they moved. I’ve always been very close to my parents and so when they moved I promised that I would visit them every summer from then on. I stood by that.
Six years ago I visited them as a young adult making her way in the world, and now I visit them with my husband and their grandchildren. It’s crazy how much things have changed in six years!
We always bring our car over so that we can go on family road trips. This year we had a little mishap with our car and ended up needing a mechanic. Hobart isn’t an overly big place and so it didn’t disrupt our family road trip too much. We were just happy to be spending time together and ended up visiting this small remote cafe near where our car broke down.
Our kids actually really enjoyed the experience. They thought it was really cool being stranded and liked watching the mechanic do the car repairs. Hobart, according to them, is the coolest place in the world. Hobart has their grandparents, walking tracks, beaches and car mechanics. They’ve asked to move here several times and part of me would like to take them up on it.
I wouldn’t mind living near my parents again. I miss them every day that I’m not with them and would love for them to be able to watch their grandchildren grow up. I think I’m going to talk about it with my husband when we get back home to Melbourne. I’ll keep you all updated.
For now, I’m going to enjoy the time I have with my parents and family. I’m lucky to be so close to the people around me. I can’t wait for all of us to grow and thrive together.
